MESMA in Manila!
Peter Jones (Governance) presents WP6 research at UNEP Global Conference on Land Ocean Interactions (23-24 Jan 2012).
Peter Jones (Governance) gave a presentation at the UNEP Global Conference on Land Ocean Interactions (Manila, The Philippines on 23-24 January) in a parallel session on Ecosystem-Based Management. He drew on the MESMA WP6 research in discussing governance frameworks for effectively implementing ecosystem-based marine spatial planning.Recommendations for the UNEP Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land Based Activities (which seems to have been extended to fishing, tourism development and related MSP considerations) now include the need for diverse and resilient governance frameworks, for institutional connectivity and for governance evaluation frameworks to analyse case studies in order to support the dissemination of good practice. These recommendations now go for discussion, revision and agreement at the Inter-Governmental Review (IGR) later in January and then on to the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), to be held in June 2012
